Chasing El Nino ~ Pe'ahi Goes Off In February 2016 ~ Maui Big Wave Surfing ~ Photos by Terry Way

The 2016 El Nino event has been fantastic for surfers and big wave lovers. Swell trains keep getting generated and have made for some remarkable conditions at some of the Pacific's premier big wave locations. Pe'ahi, aka Jaws on Maui's North coast has had a banner season. This spot produces the largest and most perfect waves on the planet. Just about every week another massive swell arrives, pushing the limits of what was considered possible in heavy water conditions. I have made a few trips over to document the spectacle and have some images to share. Enjoy! Feel free to contact me for prints or licensing rights.

Russell Bierke is part of the future big wave surfing brigade. At only 18 years he seems completely comfortable in very large surf.

Maui loves Kai Lenny. Here he gets whipped into a bomb. Feb.26

This was the morning after the historic Eddie contest at Waimea and Kai was the first and only person out. He was towed into several great waves and later paddled into a few more once the crowd showed up.

He put on an interesting bit of camera headgear for a few too.
